Finding Beauty: New Lessons in Seeing, Drawing, and Painting Flowers
with Kelly Kilmer

Finding Beauty

Beauty surrounds us. We just need to know where to look, how to see it, and what to focus on.

As I continue to deep dive into explorations of drawing and painting flowers, I want to invite you on the journey with me.

$90
Two dates to choose from!
Saturday, June 18 OR Monday, June 20
Class is held 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. PDT, with a 2-hour lunch/draw/dream break
Select a Date! Either June 18th OR June 20th!
All you need is: some references (could be actual flowers or found images), a few of your favorite pencils, a sharpener, your journal, your favorite brushes, a small painting knife and a handful of your favorite acrylics. Oh, and a desire to play, explore and ask questions is helpful, too!
What you will be doing: drawing, A LOT OF DRAWING to reinforce confidence and to generate ideas! You will also be painting your drawings and taking your own notes along the way to document your discoveries and tools used.

This is not a workshop to learn how to draw and paint MY flowers. Yes, I will demonstrate how I work but I want you to slow down, see, and follow which flower and botanical images call to you. I want to help you find your way.

Note: this workshop is entirely different than BLOOM (they do complement each other and can be taken separately or together.) Not only am I teaching how to draw different flowers but we are narrowing the focus to drawing and painting flowers (NO painted backgrounds or making books in Finding Beauty.) You can work on separate sheets of paper but I would encourage you to work in a journal form to document your explorations and discoveries.

Workshop format:
via Zoom
  • The lessons are recorded and then sent to you within 24-48 hours after the workshop ends.
  • Our workshop begins with drawing flowers! Bring a pencil sharpener, a small handful of your favorite pencils (I like to use a couple of different colors), and your journal with paper that can hold up to acrylic paint.
  • There is a 2-hour break between the drawing and painting session. This is to encourage you to recharge your batteries (and your device!) Take a walk, nap, grab some lunch, or, keep drawing on your own.
  • We will reconvene after the break and change our focus to painting our flowers.
  • You will walk away with several pages of new work, new confidence, and a fiery passion for drawing and painting flowers that you love!

Who is Kelly Kilmer?

Kelly Kilmer is a Los Angeles-based painter and art instructor.

For over 25 years, Kelly has taught art workshops across the US as well as internationally. When the pandemic hit, Kelly embraced the change in the art world and began to develop new ideas and ways to teach her workshops online.

Kelly’s workshops teach people to discover their own unique and creative voice. Using a variety of media and techniques (acrylics, drawing, collage, writing), her workshops bring out the artist in everyone. Kelly’s workshops are process-based and center on problem-solving, idea-generating, and forward-thinking. Kelly believes that art and creativity should be accessible to everyone.

Kelly says “My work is all about connections, connecting to myself as well as the world around me. Books have been a passion of mine as well as a constant companion since I was a child. Twenty-five years ago, I began recycling discarded and unwanted books into visual, painted journals. I dissected them, sewed in new pages, and gave them new life. They become unique vessels of color, pattern, and image that reflect how I see and experience the world. Painting and working in book form is my primary form of creativity.”

When Kelly is not painting and teaching, writing in her studio journal, or reading (mostly books about artists, painting, philosophy, and classic literature (Moby Dick is her favorite book)), she enjoys being with her family, watching films (especially on film!), collecting autographs, visiting art museums, walking, a good road trip, and spending time surrounded by giant trees or sitting by the ocean.
